Italian-inspired dessert with a West African twist
Ingredients
- 1 tsp (4g) matcha powder
- 40 ml hot water (not boiling, about 175°F / 80°C)
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- ½ bar milk-dark chocolate (Luji’s Ginger + Plantain Chocolate), chopped
- Ice cream scoop (for shaping)
Instructions
- Prepare the matcha: In a bowl, whisk the matcha with hot (not boiling) water until smooth and slightly frothy. Set aside.
- Chop the chocolate: Finely chop about half a bar of the ginger + plantain chocolate into small chunks and crumbs.
- Build the base: Sprinkle a layer of chopped chocolate at the bottom of your serving bowl or glass.
- Add the ice cream : Place one scoop of ice cream over the chocolate layer to lightly cover it. Then add a second scoop in the center to create a rounded “core.”
- Pour the matcha: Slowly pour the whisked matcha around the ice cream to create a gentle melt and layered effect.
-
Finish: Top with more chopped chocolate for texture and a hint of spice.
Serve immediately and enjoy.
What is a Matcha Affogato?
A matcha affogato is a twist on the classic Italian dessert, where hot espresso is poured over ice cream. Instead of coffee, this version uses matcha (green tea), creating a lighter, more balanced dessert with a subtle earthy flavor.

Tips for the Best Matcha Affogato
- Use high-quality matcha for a smoother, less bitter flavor
- Avoid boiling water, as it can make matcha taste harsh
- Chop the chocolate finely so it melts slightly into the ice cream
- Serve immediately for the best texture and contrast
A Note on the Chocolate
This recipe uses Luji’s Ginger + Plantain Chocolate for a reason.
Ginger and plantain are staples in West African cooking — bringing warmth, texture, and a subtle sweetness that pairs naturally with chocolate. Here, they add depth to the matcha affogato, turning a simple dessert into something more layered and unexpected.
